Installation Process and Conditions

Use a slow-speed drill and paddle to mix the base and hardener thoroughly. Transfer the mixture to another bucket and mix again for one minute. Poor mixing can cause yellow stains in the screed. Pour the fully mixed base and hardener into a clean polypropylene or stainless steel mixing container.

Gradually add the aggregate to the pre-mixed binder while continuing to mix for 2-3 minutes in a forced action mixer. Avoid vigorous mixing to prevent air bubbles. Ensure all materials stuck to the sides, bottom, and corners of the mixer are fully blended. If the mixing area is far from the installation site, account for the transfer time, as it may reduce the workable time.

Use proper PPE at all times. Apply the Altro Screed 3mm standard system to the primed surface using a clean stainless steel trowel or sledge. Lay the flooring to a uniform depth of 3mm and ensure the surface is compact. Minor surface variations may occur due to hand finishing, but skilled workers will minimise these to maintain appearance and performance. Allow the screed to cure enough for light foot traffic, which takes about 24 hours at 20°C or 48 hours at 12°C. Use site overshoes to protect the surface.

Seal the system with two coats of Altro Screed Seal™. Ensure the resin screed is free from contamination, de-nibbed, and thoroughly vacuumed before sealing.

Conditions

Altro Quickcure Extra works effectively at lower temperatures compared to epoxy resin types without affecting the cure rate. When using it as a seal coat, consider the other resin types in the system, as they will determine the installation temperature and curing time.

Apply the product in well-ventilated areas. Altro epoxy resin products should not be mixed or applied outside the temperature range of 10°C to 25°C. Both the slab and air temperature must stay between 10°C and 25°C. During curing, conditions should remain at least 3°C above the dew point and below 75% relative humidity. If the site temperature is below 10°C, cure times will increase significantly unless external heating is used.

Concrete slab temperatures are often lower than air temperatures, sometimes by as much as 10°C, which will affect curing speed. In humid or cold conditions, moisture may condense on the surface during curing, potentially causing permanent clouding, known as “blooming.” Limited airflow, high humidity, or wet conditions can also lead to condensation. Temperature and humidity strongly influence workability, open time, curing process, and when the floor can be used again.

Altro Screed 4mm Static-Dissipative

Altro Screed 4mm static dissipative is made from coloured and carbon-coated quartz combined with solvent-free epoxy resins. It creates a strong, chemical-resistant, and decorative flooring solution. This flooring prevents static build-up by safely dissipating electrical charges at a controlled rate. In industries where stray static electricity could damage equipment or where handling powders and liquids requires static control, this flooring is essential.

Note: Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative is not a fully conductive floor. It is unsuitable for areas with intrinsic safety requirements where static discharge could cause explosions, such as those involving gases, flammable liquids, munitions, or pyrotechnics.

Standard colours

Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative comes in 3 standard colors. For consistent color, use a single batch as strict quality checks are in place. The conducting additives may cause some colours to appear darker.

Typical areas of use

  • Powder production areas
  • Breakdown of electrostatic sensitive devices
  • Production halls (dry operations)
  • Clean rooms
  • Warehouses
  • Dry storage areas
  • Laboratories
  • Electronics and static control environments

Benefits

  • Moderate impact strength
  • Abrasion resistant
  • Can be laid to falls
  • Vertical application
  • Moderate chemical resistance

Sustainability and Chemical Resistance

Altro’s Steps to Sustainability program focuses on improving how we use the planet’s resources.

Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative is resistant to many chemicals. However, exposure to chemicals or water during the curing process can cause discolouration, staining, or changes in gloss. It is important to clean up spills immediately, wash the surface with clean water, and use a wet vacuum to remove excess water. While some chemicals may cause discolouration, this does not impact the strength or durability of the resin screed.

Installation Process and Conditions

Altro Prime static-dissipative: Use a drill with a mixing paddle. Pour the hardener into the base and mix for 2 minutes. Avoid mixing too vigorously to prevent air bubbles. If the mixing area is far from the installation site, account for the time spent transferring the material, as it reduces the open installation time.

Always wear the correct PPE. Pour the mixed material into a large roller tray or create a river of the material on the prepared surface. Use a medium pile synthetic roller or dense foam rubber squeegee to spread it evenly and fully cover the surface.

Finish with a roller to ensure uniform coverage. While wet, fully cover the surface with Altro conductive aggregate and allow it to cure. Once cured, vacuum off the excess aggregate before applying Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative.

Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative: Use a slow-speed drill and paddle to mix the base and hardener thoroughly. Transfer the mix to a clean polypropylene or stainless steel container. Gradually add the aggregate into the binder while continuing to mix for another 2-3 minutes.

Do not use a single-paddle Danes mixer, as it is unsuitable. Avoid vigorous mixing to prevent air bubbles. Make sure all material on the sides, bottom, and corners of the container is blended in. If mixing is done away from the installation site, factor in transfer time, as it shortens the open installation window. Always wear proper PPE. Use a clean stainless steel trowel or sledge to apply the Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative to the prepared, primed surface.

Ensure the material is applied to a depth of 4mm and forms a uniform, compact layer. Slight variations from trowelling may occur but should not affect performance when handled by a skilled worker. Seal the system with two coats of Altro Screed standard seal coat. Ensure the resin screed surface is clean and free from contamination and vacuumed as needed before sealing.

Conditions

Apply in well-ventilated areas. Keep both the slab and air temperature between 10°C and 25°C. Avoid mixing or laying epoxy resin products outside this range. Ambient conditions should be at least 3°C above the dew point or below 75% relative humidity during the early curing stages. If site temperatures fall below 10°C, curing will take much longer unless external heating is used. Note that concrete slab temperatures are often up to 10°C lower than air temperatures, which will impact curing time.

During curing, moisture vapour can condense on the surface in humid or cold conditions, causing permanent clouding or ‘blooming.’ Poor airflow and high humidity can lead to condensation on partially cured floors. Ambient conditions will significantly affect workability, curing time, and when the floor can handle traffic.

Do not apply the Altro Screed 4mm static-dissipative variant when temperatures are rising, as this can lead to pinholes. Preheat the substrate before starting and maintain its temperature throughout the application process.

Altro Screed 4mm Standard and 4mm Slip-Resistant Variant

Altro Screed 4mm is a solvent-free, three-part epoxy resin system made up of clear resin and colored graded aggregates. It offers moderate chemical and impact resistance, making it ideal for medium to heavy duty areas. For areas with a slip risk, the slip resistant variant should be used.

Altro Quickcure Extra seal coats reduce downtime and allow faster use after application. These seal coats are a key part of the finished epoxy screed. The standard seal coat seals the surface, ensuring it is hygienic and easy to clean, but does not increase slip-resistance. The slip-resistant seal coat provides the same benefits as the standard version, with added slip-resistance.

Altro Seal water-based matt is a clear polyurethane seal applied with a roller. It gives epoxy screeds a matt finish, creating a natural look while reducing light reflections that may highlight imperfections or uneven surfaces.

Installation Process and Conditions

Use a slow-speed drill with a paddle to thoroughly mix the base and hardener. Transfer the entire mixture into a clean polypropylene or stainless steel mixing container. Gradually add the aggregate into the pre-mixed binder while continuing to mix for 2-3 minutes using a forced action mixer.

Do not use a single-paddle Danes-type mixer with this product. Avoid overly vigorous mixing to prevent air from entering the mix. Ensure all materials sticking to the sides, bottom, and corners of the mixer are fully blended. If the mixing area is far from the installation site, account for the time it takes to transfer the material, as this will reduce the open installation time. Always wear appropriate PPE.

Use a clean stainless steel trowel or sledge to apply the Altro Screed to the primed surface. Ensure the system is laid to the desired 4mm depth and fully closed off to achieve a uniform surface. Hand finishing may lead to slight surface variations, but skilled workers aim to minimise this without affecting the overall look or performance. Seal the system with two coats of Altro Quickcure Extra seal. Ensure the resin screed surface is clean, contamination-free, de-nibbed, and thoroughly vacuumed before sealing.

Conditions

Altro Quickcure Extra can be used at lower temperatures than epoxy resins without affecting its curing process. When using it as a seal coat, consider the other resins in the system to determine the installation temperature and curing rate. Apply the product in well-ventilated areas. Epoxy resins should not be mixed or applied if air and slab temperatures are outside the 10°C to 25°C range. Both temperatures must stay at least 3°C above the dew point or below 75% relative humidity during the early curing stages.

If site temperatures fall below 10°C, curing will take longer unless external heating is applied. Concrete slab temperatures are often up to 10°C cooler than air temperatures, which impacts curing time. Moisture can condense on the surface in humid or cold conditions, leading to permanent clouding, known as “blooming,” in epoxy systems. Limited airflow and high humidity can also cause condensation on partially cured floors. Ambient conditions directly affect working time, curing progress, and when the floor can handle traffic.

Hand finishing may cause slight surface variations, but skilled workers aim to minimise these to maintain functionality and appearance. Seal the system with two coats of Altro Screed seal. Make sure the resin screed surface is free of contamination, de-nibbed, and vacuumed thoroughly before sealing.

Conditions

Apply in well-ventilated areas. Ensure both the slab and air temperature are above 10°C and rising, but not exceeding 25°C. Avoid mixing or applying epoxy resin outside this temperature range. Maintain ambient conditions at least 3°C above the dew point or below 75% relative humidity during curing. If site temperatures drop below 10°C, curing will take much longer unless external heating is provided. Note that the concrete slab is often up to 10°C cooler than the air, affecting curing time. During curing, moisture can condense on the surface in humid or poorly ventilated conditions, causing permanent clouding known as “blooming.” Cold, wet, or humid environments with limited airflow can lead to condensation on partially cured floors. Ambient conditions will significantly impact workability, open time, curing speed, and readiness for traffic.

FAQs

What is the maintenance guide for Altro Screed?

The frequency and level of cleaning needed depend on factors such as:

  • Floor colour
  • Surface texture
  • Spillages or contamination
  • Traffic type and frequency
  • Entrance matting effectiveness
  • Dirt from adjacent surfaces

Here’s how to clean resin flooring:

  1. Sweep the floor to remove debris.
  2. Clean using a solution of Altro 44 detergent (or similar) diluted 1:20 to 1:40 with water. Use a deck scrubber or mechanical scrubbing machine with brushes to agitate the solution.
  3. Let the detergent sit for a few minutes to loosen dirt, scrubbing during this time. Remove the solution with a wet vacuum.
  4. Rinse the floor with clean water (no detergent), scrubbing as needed. Remove the water with a wet vacuum and allow the floor to dry. Leftover detergent can create a sticky surface that attracts more dirt.

In some cases, a high-solids acrylic emulsion dressing can be applied to make cleaning easier. However, this reduces the floor’s texture and slip-resistance. If used, three coats are typically applied, with the final coat buffed to a gloss.

When surface dressings are applied, slip- resistance depends on the chosen cleaning routine and dressing application. Effective entrance matting can reduce cleaning needs. While resin floors are durable and resistant to many chemicals, certain cleaning agents may shorten their lifespan. Altro can provide guidance on cleaning materials based on the provided data sheets.

What is the lifespan of Altro Screed floors?

Altro Screed floors typically last between 10 to 15 years. Their lifespan depends on factors such as the level of traffic, proper maintenance, and the environment in which they are installed. Regular cleaning and avoiding harsh chemicals will help preserve their condition over time.

Can you remove Altro Screed from floors?

Yes, Altro Screed can be removed from floors. The process typically involves mechanical methods, such as grinding or shot blasting, to lift the material. It is important to consult professionals to ensure the removal is done safely and effectively without damaging the substrate beneath.
