What is Floor Scabbling?

If you’ve never come across the term “concrete scabbling” or “floor scabbling”, then it’s a very quick, easy, safe and cost-effective way to prepare concrete floor surfaces which require more than the standard floor preparation.

At times, concrete surfaces can become heavily contaminated, especially where the surface contamination has seeped into the surface. Carried out using scabblers, devices that ‘flail’ the surface – which is a viable solution used to remove the build-up of hard deposits sitting on concrete surfaces due to production toppings, laitance or overspill as well as industrial glues, or due to remnants and/or signs of previous flooring systems.

This process can also be used for anything between single high spots removal to level reduction of a complete area. Since scabbling can generally leave a heavily textured surface once work has been completed, we use a vacuum-assisted diamond grinding machine to smooth out that surface according to the level you desire, along with your choice of floor finish.

What machine do you use to scabble concrete?

A floor scabbler, also known as a walk-behind, this machine is designed for larger surface areas. It features rotating drums or heads with multiple cutters or flails that impact the concrete surface. Typically powered by electric motors, gasoline engines, or pneumatic systems. They are efficient for covering larger areas quickly.

Scabbling hammers may be used smaller areas or detailed work where maneuverability may be required. This handheld machine features multiple reciprocating heads fitted with carbide or steel tips. It is manually operated and allows for precise control over the process.

What is a concrete floor scabbler?

With regards to preparing concrete surfaces, scabblers peck at the concrete in a rotary motion with steel tipped rods in rapid succession. This mechanical process is highly effective in shaping and scappling stone or concrete. The machines can vary in size and power, pneumatic devices using compressed air are not uncommon.
