Case Study – M & S Robotics Distribution Centre

Client Overview:

This project was completed for a company on behalf of Marks & Spencer at the South Marston Industrial Estate. The site was a large distribution warehouse being upgraded to accommodate Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). The robotics company required a high-quality flooring system tailored to several specific needs to ensure the seamless operation of their advanced robotic systems. The client was thrilled with the results and has expressed interest in using the same system for future projects.

Challenge:

The project posed a tight timeline, requiring 6,000m² of flooring to be completed within just two weeks. Although the timeframe was ambitious, our team collaborated seamlessly with the on-site management team, avoiding setbacks and ensuring smooth progress.

Due to the ongoing work by other trades, the project had to be completed in two phases. Additionally, the flooring system needed to meet highly specific requirements, including ultra-high abrasion resistance, uniform aesthetics, effective electrostatic discharge (ESD) properties, strict floor flatness levels, and a low light reflectance value (LRV). These factors were critical to ensure the robots could operate efficiently without disruptions.

DHL Challenge

Solution:

After a thorough consultation and assessment, the DCF Express Satin system was selected as the ideal solution. This system balanced the client’s need for durability, precision, and efficiency within the set budget and timeline.

DHL Solution

To ensure the system was suitable, a sample area was prepared and tested. This step confirmed that the selected flooring would meet the client’s specifications, marking the first time this system was used for such an application. The ability to tailor the flooring to these unique requirements showcased our team’s adaptability and commitment to client satisfaction.

Outcome:

The flooring installation was completed ahead of schedule, thanks to the efficiency of the DCF Express Satin system. Its rapid application process, which eliminates downtime due to drying, allowed for extended work shifts, enabling the team to meet the tight deadline.

The finished product delivered an excellent balance of functionality and aesthetics. It met all the specified criteria, including durability, ESD properties, and flatness levels, ensuring seamless operation for the AMRs. The client was ecstatic with the results, noting that the final product exceeded expectations.
