How Does Slip Resistant Flooring Work?

Floors achieve their slip resistance by the “profile” of their surface, so as a general rule the smoother the surface the more likely it is to be slippery it is likely to be. However, very smooth floors in a dry state can have no problems at all. Depending on the product, anti-slip properties are created by either adding abrasive materials to them or embossing the product to change the surface.

Resins for instance can have grit, small microbeads, flakes and even be glass reinforced to vary the the required slip resistance from project to project. Being able to tailor this finish to the unique needs of a customer is a perfect solution in some instance, especially in industrial settings. On the other hand something like vinyl flooring is the ideal solution for a project where the specific slip resistance required has been determined and the ideal product can be taken “off the shelf”.

Environments With a High ‘Slip Risk’

In environments where the slip risk is particularly high, like around pools, commercial kitchens and showers, the anti-slip properties of a product take on an even greater importance. In these settings it is vital that a highly slip resistant product be selected and installed to ensure the safety of all those using the area.

To achieve this level of slip resistance in industrial applications, products with specialised finishes are used such as those with glass reinforcement or extra friction-inducing materials embedded into them. With these kinds of specialist resins, a higher than average level of slip resistance can be achieved which will ensure that the flooring is safe for use.

FAQs

How long does safety flooring last?

This will vary on the product that is installed and what the area is getting used for. Non slip vinyl flooring in a commercial kitchen may only last a few years if it is a high traffic area and subject to spills from boiling water. However in a relatively light use kitchen you could expect 8-10 years form an anti-slip vinyl floor covering.

The most robust products are resins, these flooring products are designed to deal with the harshest of conditions and we have been back to jobs that we have installed after 10 years and they are still doing a great job. Ceramic tiles are also long lasting option.

Is concrete anti slip?

Concrete can be finished in a number of ways. This is dependant on the profile that it has, if a highly polished concrete gets wet then there can be a risk of slipping. However if it has been finished with a brushed profile it is highly anti slip.

Whatever the current state of your concrete is, we have processes and materials that can make it as smooth or have as much anti-slip safety as you desire. These processes and products include – diamond grinding, polishing, shot blasting, scabbling, anti-slip coatings and many other methods.

Whilst creating a profile mechanically in your concrete will make it ant slip, this will also open the surface which can make it stain easily. Alternatively, we would recommend an anti slip coating, these products provide many benefits as they protect your concrete, are not easy to scratch.

How do you make a floor slip resistant?

There are several methods used to make a floor slip resistant. The most common one is the use of anti-slip coatings, which can provide protection and prevent scratches and staining. Other methods include diamond grinding, polishing, shot blasting, scabbling, and more. If you have already finished your concrete with a brushed profile, then it should already be slip resistant.

However, if you would like to increase the slip resistance even further then we recommend adding an anti-slip coating to your flooring. This will ensure that it is safe and protects against any potential slips or falls. Additionally, this type of coating can also protect against staining and other damage.

Finally, make sure to properly maintain your flooring by regularly cleaning it and checking for scratches or imperfections. If these are spotted, be sure to take care of them immediately in order to ensure the longevity of your slip resistant floor. This will allow you to maintain a safe environment while also keeping the area looking fresh and inviting.
